Andusia celebrates one millionth tonne sent to recovery

Andusia Recovered Fuels is celebrating the collection and despatch to Europe of its one millionth tonne of refuse derived fuel (RDF).

The bale was collected from the St Bernard’s Mill materials recycling facility (MRF) in Leeds, operated by waste management firm, Associated Waste Management.

To mark the occasion, Andusia held a small event which representatives from both companies attended. The guests watched the bale – which was wrapped in gold film – depart from the site. They were then given a tour of Associated Waste Management’s (AWM) MRF.

Since Andusia’s launch in 2012, the company has grown to be one of the UK’s largest independent exporters of RDF across Europe. In 2016 Andusia collected its 750,000th tonne followed by its 900,000th tonne in 2017.

Milestone

Andusia said it is pleased to be celebrating the milestone with two of its long-standing customers. The millionth-tonne was produced and collected from AWM and then delivered to SWB in Bremen.

AWM, based in Yorkshire, provides waste resource management and commercial recycling solutions, employing over 248 staff across 10 facilities.

Commenting on the milestone, Mike Robinson from AWM said: “Here at Associated Waste Management we are very pleased to be involved in this exciting industry event, and proud that Andusia’s millionth tonne will be produced at our facility. We have enjoyed a long relationship with Andusia and look forward to this continuing.”

Andusia collects RDF from AWM’s three MRFs: two in Leeds and one in Bradford

Andusia collects RDF from AWM’s three MRFs: two in Leeds and one in Bradford. Andusia currently exports to Germany, the Netherlands and Norway.

The bale was then transported to SWB in Bremen which has been working with Andusia for many years. SWB are a well-established company in the waste to energy market, operating two energy from waste plants in Bremen.

Experience

Michael Bartels from SWB said: “Andusia are a strong and credible supplier of ours. With the directors having plenty of experience between them, we can always rely on Andusia to provide not only the best market knowledge, but also service. We’re proud to be involved in this milestone for Andusia.”

In order to achieve this impressive milestone Andusia said it worked with one of its most reliable hauliers to collect and safely deliver the millionth bale, TrailerTrans.

“As Andusia approaches its sixth anniversary, it is excited to celebrate this milestone in RDF export which further confirm its position in the market place,” said Mark Terrell, general manager of Andusia.

Andusia has recently increased its team to deal with the growing business demand and recently announced that the company has now moved into the loose RDF market rather than just baled.

The company said this move will increase supply chain offering and will allow use of a wider supply base from energy waste management companies that would have previously been excluded from the RDF export market.

AWM is a regional waste management firm. It currently holds long-term contracts with a number of local authorities for the collection and treatment of waste, including Leeds, Bradford and North Yorkshire councils.
