Andrew Hartley takes on British Glass communications

Andrew Hartley, Rockware's former marketing manger, has taken a full-time position at glass trade association British Glass.

Mr Hartley has taken on the new role of director of strategy and communications for the packaging sector of British Glass. The new role will see Mr Hartley build on the responsibilities he developed with British Glass previously. For the past three years, he has been chair of British Glass's packaging public affairs committee, and he has promoted container glass recycling extensively through his role as chairman of the trade association's publicity arm, Glasspac.

Mr Hartley told letsrecycle.com: “The new position will drive the promotion of glass as a packaging material to the trade but will also focus on legislative issues and wider environmental issues. It will be very much a continuation of what I was doing before.”

British Glass has previously been involved in environmental legislation in more of a technical than a political capacity. But Mr Hartley said the new job had been created in response to increasing environmental legislation such as the packaging directive and emissions trading legislation.

“There is a recognition that we need to lead the debate rather than to be led by the legislation,” he added. “My role is to push a more complementary view of all that legislation on the whole rather than individual pieces of legislation, and to develop a cohesive strategy.”

Director general of British Glass David Workman said: “Andrew's appointment is part of the industry's strategy to work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders in order to work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders in order to ensure glass recycling continues to grow and that glass remains the first choice material for food and drinks packaging.”

Mr Hartley joined Rockware Glass in 1987 and managed the glass reprocessing company's communications campaigns, including 'Glassforever'. His responsibilities at Rockware will now be shared between former business development manager Sharon Crayton and director of logistics Malcolm Vernon.
