Agency offers letters as cover for hazardous codes

Companies and business that produce hazardous waste have been able to
register their premises with the Environment Agency in writing since
April, and via the telephone and internet since May this year. So far
around 30,000 premises have registered.

A spokesman for the Agency confirmed that the difficulties with the IT registration system had continued –

“Consequently, people have not been able to
register over the website using the credit card system and the bulk
registration system, which allows a large number of premises to register
at once, has not been available. Nevertheless we are processing those
bulk registrations sent to us manually.”

Because of this there are now many companies who have either registered through the bulk registration system, or intend to, but will not receive their registration code in time for the 16th July deadline. “As a result of this, in the short term,” said the spokesman, “we will consider a site to be registered once we have received the company's
correct details and money.

Confirmation
“In return, the registering company will receive confirmation, (by email
or letter), that we have received their details. Until their
registration has been processed, they will be able to use this
confirmation note as interim proof of registration in the absence of the
relevant registration code. The code will follow when we have fully
checked and processed their registration details.”

On a cautionary note, the Agency spokesman added: “However, this does not mean that companies who have not registered or have no proof that they have made an effort to register do not risk being prosecuted by the Environment Agency.”
