4R Group to build Yorkshire facility
The recycling centre will be dedicated to the storage and treatment of organic wastes and by-products

Organics recycling company 4R Group have been granted planning permission to convert a former peat works site in East Riding, Yorkshire, into a “specialist waste-to-land recycling centre”.  The permission is subject to a section 106 agreement being reached between the 4R Group and the local authority [updated 7 September 2020].

The site, which will have the capacity to process up to 100,000 tonnes of organic waste a year, consists of six acres of concrete and 45,000 sq ft of indoor space.

It will be “dedicated to the storage and treatment of organic wastes and by-products that are routinely applied to land to benefit soils and crops”.

Initial plans for the site were submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire council nearly two years ago.

Permit

4R confirmed that the facility will be regulated by the Environment Agency under a bespoke Environmental permit, which is currently in the “minded to approve” stage, under final consultation.

The company added that they hope to start construction and “opening phases” this autumn.

The site will serve 4R’s customers who are producers and end users of wastes and by-products.

The company said that the capacity of the site will provide a “great opportunity” to secure “much-needed” contingency storage to customers, which will include winter storage options.

4R confirmed that it will be accepting composts, green waste, and food waste at the facility.

Great opportunities

Managing director at 4R, Jon Smith, said: “Getting our planning consent over the line is an important first step to realising the great opportunities this site will provide us, and the wider organics recycling sector.

“There is a significant focus on promoting good practices to improve the health of cultivated soils, and the use of valuable organic matter from wastes and by-products is a sustainable and affordable way for farmers and landowners to help achieve this.

“Having safe and secure storage and treatment facilities for these materials is absolutely essential, and the former peat works site can provide significant contingency storage options for our customers. With our permit now in the ‘minded to approve’ process, we are excited to be able to start developing the site in preparation for the upcoming winter’.”
