350m people globally have access to a DRS

350 million people across the globe have access to a deposit return scheme (DRS), according to circular economy non-profit Reloop.

The organisation has launched its Global Deposit Dashboard which aims to improve policymaking around the circular economy.

The dashboard shows comparable, transparent information on DRS policies and system performance across regions which the Reloop hopes will guide decision making.

England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to launch their own DRS in October 2027 with the scheme administrator expecting to be announced later this month.

The dashboard also shows the continued growth of DRS programmes, the first scheme was launched in British Columbia in 1970 and covered around two million people.

Based on the latest data from 2024, it shows that a record-breaking number of people now have access to deposit return schemes.

The total population of Europeans with access to Deposit Return schemes reached 185 million in 2024, up from 165 million in 2023.

Clarissa Morawski, CEO of Reloop, said: “We know that deposit return systems work, but good design relies on good data.

“Reloop’s Global Deposit Dashboard gives users the tools to understand what’s happening on the ground, compare systems and use those insights to make better decisions.

“As the UK government moves ahead with the vital Deposit Return Scheme, the dashboard offers insights which demonstrate the well-evidenced benefits of these schemes around the world.”

Sarah Horner, UK and Ireland director of Reloop, added: “Our new Global Deposit Dashboard is a vital tool for policymakers and businesses, enabling them to explore, compare and analyse deposit return schemes worldwide.

“Examining programmes in isolation only tells us part of the story- this platform brings the data together, offering meaningful insights into what works.

“Its analytical features support informed, effective decision-making and help pave the way for a smoother transition to a circular economy through well-designed deposit return schemes.”

Digital Deposit Dashboard webinars

Reloop will be hosting a series of webinars to introduce the Digital Deposit Dashboard.

The webinars will be held on the 23 April, with two session times available: 10:00 AM GMT and 6:00 PM GMT.

The dashboard builds on Reloop’s Global Deposit Book which was launched last year.
