North Tyneside Council has awarded a £220 million contract covering waste transfer, treatment and Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) operations.

The contract, which includes VAT, was awarded to Suez Recycling and Recovery UK, is due to begin on 1 April 2027 and will initially run for 10 years until 31 March 2037.

The council has the option to extend the agreement for a further 10 years, potentially taking the contract through to March 2047.

Under the agreement, Suez will continue to manage North Tyneside’s waste transfer station and HWRC, as well as the transfer and treatment of residual household waste and garden waste.

Suez will also treat selected recyclable materials and support the development of services focused on waste prevention, reuse and recycling.

Steve Patterson, Managing Director – North at Suez, commented: “We are delighted to have agreed a new contract with our long-standing partners at North Tyneside Council and to continue supporting residents with essential waste and recycling services across the borough.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Council to support its environmental ambitions, helping increase recycling rates, and re-use opportunities through Renew North Tyneside, while delivering high-quality services for the community over the years ahead.”

The renewed partnership will include a focus on reuse through Suez’s Renew initiative, which removes items from the waste stream to be cleaned, repaired and sold back into the local economy.

Renew North Tyneside sold 30,000 affordable items to local residents during its first three months of operation, the council said.

North Tyneside Council manages almost 100,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables each year, including household rubbish, recycling and garden waste collected from homes across the borough, alongside materials brought to its HWRC.

Councillor Willie Samuel, Cabinet Member for Environmental Sustainability at North Tyneside Council, added: “This contract secures the future of waste management services in North Tyneside and provides a strong platform for improving environmental outcomes across the borough.

“It reflects our commitment to delivering value for money while ensuring residents continue to receive reliable and high-quality waste services.”
