Over the course of the World Cup, Recycle Now and Every Can Counts has predicted that 2 billion canned drinks will be consumed.
The total market value of the consumed and recycled aluminium drinks has been estimated to be 28.5 million.
Aluminium cans that have been recycled are often valued around £1000 per tonne. This means that the total number of cans consumed during the World Cup and recycled in the UK would be valued at similar levels as the players in the England squad.
WRAP estimated that recycled cans could buy both John Stones (£11 million) and Jordan Pickford (£14 million) and a third of Harry Kane (£75 million), while from the Scottish lineup they could snap up Captain Andy Robertson (£6.5 million), Aaron Hickey (£15 million) and John McGinn (£18 million).
Recycle Now are encouraging both at home and travelling fans to support the environment by recycling their aluminium cans.
Adam Herriott, Recycle Now explained: “Just like any international footballer, aluminium cans can enjoy a glittering career and go for a lot of money on the transfer market.
“Given this year’s tournament is in Canada, Mexico and the USA many people will be toasting their team with canned drinks at home. Our campaign reminds everyone – don’t binny your tinny – because the World Cup isn’t the only valuable metal being traded this year.”
Food Waste Minister Mary added: ”As the World Cup kicks off, let’s make our recycling world class!
“Protect our beautiful countryside, channel Harry Kane, and hit top bins by recycling your cans!”
The campaign is aiming to ensure that drink cans are recycled correctly even when fans are in a rush to dispose of their drinks.
They are looking to show more than just football fans the importance of recycling when at events such as music festivals.
Many not-for-profit organisations will be involved during these festivals to further spread the message to the public.
Chris Latham-Warde, Programme Manager for Every Can Counts, added: ”With billions of drink cans expected to be used during the World Cup, the tournament is an important opportunity to highlight the importance of recycling in our everyday lives.”
Currently in the UK 10 billion cans are being recycled, which is preventing 3 million tonnes of greenhouse gases from being emitted, the equivalent of taking around 700,000 cars of the road.
