The council is to enter into negotiations for a new waste management partnership with Viridor.
” The council have been impressed with the way in which Viridor have approached this project “
– Cathy Bakewell, leader of the council
Included in the project will be the operation of services such as the network of household waste recycling centres, compost sites and landfill. It will also encorporate the building of new waste treatment facilities to further reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Following a competitive procurement exercise, the council’s executive board has decided to pursue negotiations with Viridor. It is expected that the Executive Board will be recommended in January to appoint Viridor as preferred bidder.
Financial closure for the project is hoped to be reached in March 2006, with the new contracts running from April 2006.

Cathy Bakewell, leader of the Council, said: “The council have been impressed with the way in which Viridor have approached this project and we intend to negotiate a partnership and deliver a service that will stand the people of Somerset well, and will represent value for money, now and in the future.”
