Ceredigion set to launch rural kerbside recycling trials

Ceredigion is preparing to launch a kerbside recycling scheme using pedestrian controlled vehicles in an attempt to find best practice for rural area kerbside collections.

The pilot scheme is being conducted by Ceredigion county council working with Cylch, the Wales Community Recycling Network. Starting from July 5, the “Recycle in the Box” trial will cover 1,000 households in Lampeter, using plastic boxes to collect glass, paper, cans and plastics for recycling.

The collection service will be run by Total Recovery Systems of Aberystwyth and the recyclables will be taken to LAS Waste in Lampeter.

Councillor Keith Evans said: “We all have a part to play in protecting the environment for the benefit of everyone and for future generations. Recycling is an easy way to help thanks to the Recycling in the Box scheme it is now even easier.”

The Recycle in the Box kerbside scheme joins the county council's “Recycle in the Bag” and “Recycle in the Bank” recycling pilot schemes. A council spokesperson said: “All these schemes are using different vehicles with different collection methods. The council will monitor all these schemes to find out which would work best in rural areas.”

The Recycle in the Bank scheme is targeting 16 rural communities with bring bank facilities for glass, paper, plastic and cans.

The Recycle in the Bag pilot provides a weekly kerbside collection of recyclables and green waste to 5,500 households in the south of the county. Clear bags are used for plastic, cardboard, paper and cans, a green bag is used for garden and kitchen waste and residual waste goes in a black bag.

The council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion county council last year recycled 21% and composts a further 5%. We have been one of the best performers for recycling in Wales for the last four years. This can be largely attributed to the enthusiasm of the general public, community groups and waste contractors operating in the county.”

The council has already exceeded its recycling and composting targets from the Welsh Assembly Government for 2006/07. Ceredigion is now working towards its 2009/10 targets to recycle 25% and compost 15% of its municipal waste as well as meeting landfill diversion targets from the Landfill Directive.
