Ashdown Phillips &Partners was awarded the Shining Star of the Year Award, which recognise high achievement in promoting recycling and environmental awareness. The company runs the Willow Place and Corby Town shopping centre in Corby, Northamptonshire, and has introduced a number of recycling initiatives to prevent any waste generated at the shopping centre from being sent to landfill.

Savings

Waste paper, plastic, cardboard and metal coat hangers produced by the shops and units are all recycled, and general waste that cannot be recycled is taken for disposal at an energy-from-waste plant. The centre has also signed up to the Every Can Counts programme and employees collect aluminium and steel cans for recycling.

The company has made savings of around 12,500 by not sending any waste to landfill, and through the 134 tonnes of cardboard and 13 tonnes of plastics they recycled last year, received almost 11,000 in revenue.

Operations manager at Ashdown Phillips & Partners Stephen Tysoe, said: The staff have a real passion for recycling and enjoy doing it. Without their backing, it would be very difficult to achieve the high levels.

Improvement

Meanwhile, Leisurewear distributor Prestige Leisure UK Ltd picked up the Shooting Star of the Year award for improving its recycling rate by 25% in 2011.

Two years ago the company resolved to cut down on the amount of waste it sent to landfill and made waste management one of its main objectives. More recycling bins were placed in the companys offices, warehouse and staff canteens and staff were encouraged to sort waste such as paper and aluminium cans into the correct bins.

Prestige Leisures logistics manager Gary Craig, said: We added to the amount of recycling bins we had throughout the site, and all staff were on board with the processes and understood the importance of recycling, making this a great success in a short period of time.
