Essex recycling centre hit by fire

A team of 30 fire fighters have been tackling a blaze at Cleanaway's recycling centre at Coldharbour Lane in Rainham, Essex.

Fire broke out yesterday morning (1/11/04) at about 6.30am, involving mostly stacked waste wood in an area of about one hectare.

Fire crews remained on site all day yesterday and overnight, with the fire continuing to burn today, although a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade told letsrecycle.com fire fighters were making “steady progress”. Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene throughout the day.

The London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “A large amount of waste including waste wood has been burning for 24 hours, but fire fighters have been making steady progress and the fire is expected to be out later today. This incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

No injuries or threat to life had been caused by the incident, the spokesman added, stressing that such fires were “not unusual” at waste plants.

A spokeswoman for Cleanaway said: “Cleanaway can confirm that a pile of wood is on fire at a small area of its Rainham site. We are working closely with the fire service, who are satisfied that the fire is under control, and the Environment Agency. There is no identified risk to people, buildings or the environment.
The cause is as yet unknown and we have already started an investigation.”
