Collection has been carried out free in co-operation with Serviceteam, Yell – publisher of Yellow Pages, and Breckland council.
The paper is being turned into animal bedding with the books guillotined, the card covers removed for recycling and the paper used for the bedding.
Tony Wilkins of LKF Bedding said the Yellow Pages were a useful source of material for the company. “We generally use over issue news for the bedding but this is getting in shorter and shorter supply.”
Plain waste paper is used for animal bedding dogs and other animals. However, LKF says that while there is a good market for the bedding, the company is not able to use material from paper banks and similar sources because of fear of contamination.
Schools in the area were praised for their work with the Chapel Road Special School yesterday presented with prizes for collecting 2,379 Yellow Pages in total.
“The number of Yellow Pages collected by all schools in the district is outstanding,” commented Adam Billiald, co-ordinator of Yell's Director Recycling Scheme.
Sarah Cram, public services officer for Breckland council, said: “It is excellent to see so many Yellow Pages being diverted from landfill and put to good use as animal bedding. I would like to thank all the schools who have taken part in this new scheme and I'd; also like to thank the Directory Recycling Scheme for their help.”
