Waste Recycling Group has been awarded a seven-year, 22 million deal to manage Buckinghamshire county councils 10 household waste recycling centres.
The contract, which has a possible three year extension, will begin on April 1 2012 and sees Spanish-owned Waste Recycling Group (WRG) take over from the county councils current contractor, Aylesbury Secondary Metals. Up to 61 staff will transfer across from the old contractor to WRG.
“We are delighted to have been selected by Buckinghamshire County Council for their HWRC contract”
Gordon Fergus, group commercial manager, WRG
Under the contract, the Northampton-based company plans to roll out a range of waste reduction initiatives and also make improvements across the HWRC network for the benefit of site users.
These include introducing recycling schemes for a wider range of materials at the centres and developing reuse facilities for suitable items brought in by members of the public.
The contract award was welcomed by WRGs group commercial manager, Gordon Fergus. He said: We are delighted to have been selected by Buckinghamshire County Council for their HWRC contract. We believe it demonstrates WRG’s ability to deliver the high quality service that the public demands, but in a cost-effective way that is important in these difficult economic times.
“We’re looking forward to working with the people of Buckinghamshire in helping them to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.”
Cabinet Member for environment at Buckinghamshire county council, Steven Adams, added: Our recycling centres are very popular and divert a huge amount of waste away from landfill through recycling and reuse schemes.
However the difficult financial climate we are in demands that we are achieving savings alongside better levels of performance for residents. I am very pleased that this new deal will achieve this and look forward to working with WRG.
Calvert landfill
WRG already provides waste disposal services for Buckinghamshire county council, disposing of material at the Calvert landfill site near Aylesbury. The company is also preferred bidder for the county councils long-term residual waste treatment, with proposals that would involve it building a large-scale energy-from-waste incinerator at the Calvert site (see letsrecycle.com story).
The company currently manages more than 78 HWRCs on behalf of 18 local authorities across the UK.
The Buckinghamshire HWRCs that will come under WRGs management as part of the new contract are located in Amersham, Aston Clinton, Aylesbury, Beaconsfield, Bledlow Ridge, Buckingham, Burnham, Chesham, High Wycombe and Langley.
