Wrexham to remove neighbourhood bring sites

Wrexham county borough council in North Wales is set to close 12 ‘neighbourhood recycling centres’ as the council claims they will no longer be needed due to coverage through its kerbside collection scheme.

The centres include bring banks for recyclable materials including paper, plastic bottles, cans, glass and cardboard.

The council has announced that the 12 sites will close at the end of March and has instead directed residents to its kerbside ‘Recycle with Michael’ service. The service sees foil, cans, glass and plastic collected via a green box, paper and card packaging collected via a blue bag, both on a weekly basis.

Wrexham also operates three household waste recycling centres at Bryn Lane, Brymbo and Wynnstay Bank which will remain in operation and can be used to deposit items such as paint, oils, furniture, plasterboard and other items that cannot be deposited at the kerbside.

A spokesperson for Wrexham said that the neighbourhood recycling centres were introduced as a prelude to the county borough-wide ‘Recycle with Michael’ scheme, which began in 2002 but spread across the district over a number of years.

Materials

The sites allowed residents to recycle materials such as glass and card, which were not collected at the kerbside scheme when the scheme began.

However, the kerbside recycling scheme is now operational across all households in the borough and so the council has decided to remove the sites altogether.

Wrexham council has said that a review of services is currently taking place with a view to adding new stackable recycling receptacles to be introduced this year as the council is looking to move towards the Welsh Government’s 70% by 2025 recycling target.

Last year the council approved plans to invest in a fleet of new multi-stream ‘resource recovery vehicles’ (RRVs) to further boost recycling rates (see letsrecycle.com story).

Councillor David Bithell, said: “A new recycling service is planned for later this year and new style receptacles will be distributed across the county borough to recycle more at the kerbside along with a new and efficient fleet of vehicles. A review of rounds will also take place to make sure they are all efficient and complement the new service.”

Locations

The 12 recycling sites which are set to close include Bonc Wen, Rhos; Chirk Legion, Chirk; Coop, Johnstown; Five Crosses Pub, Minera; Kings Mill Hotel, Wrexham; Moss Valley Golf Club, Moss; Pentre Gwyn Community Centre, Abenbury; The Plassey, Eyton; Scout Hut, Quarry Road, Brynteg; Station Road, Marchwiel; Dodds Lane, Gwersyllt and Ty Mawr Country Park, Newbridge.
