The research programme is starting with WRAP inviting organisations who have an interest in getting involved in one of its material programmes, either paper, glass, plastics or wood, to attend a seminar. The funding available is said to be “signficant” and thought to be worth several million pounds.
The seminars, entitled “Will WRAP Fund Our Project?” are being held in September and will introduce WRAP's research and development programme and explain what it is looking for in research proposals. WRAP will also explain its priorities for funding and the criteria by which applications will be assessed.
Jennie Price, chief executive of WRAP, said: “We have already received hundreds of unsolicited proposals but we are keen to ensure that the whole of the research and business communities have the opportunity to put their ideas forward. A key criteria for projects we fund will be the strategic contribution they are able to make towards boosting the tonnage of recycled materials used in the UK.”
The seminars will take place at the National Motorcycle Centre, Birmingham on September 13; the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on September 14; the Dynamic Earth Centre, Edinburgh on September 17; Leeds Royal Armouries on September 26; and London Business Design Centre on September 28.
To ensure that the seminars are as successful as possible, WRAP wants to know what type of organisations will be attending, which material programme they are most likely to be working on and when they are likely to be submitting an application.
The seminars are not a call for research applications which will be made after the seminar programme is completed.
The primary focus of WRAP’s material programmes is to work with manufacturing companies, other businesses and the government on increasing the applications for recycled materials and the proportion of these materials used in products. The projects will contribute towards the implementation of WRAP’s business plan, which sets targets for the four material streams.
