Aimed to boost recycling of non-aggregate materials in particular, the scheme will meet up to 30% of the costs of new plant equipment, land and infrastructure.
WRAP hopes that the programme will help them to stimulate a general “step change” in the collection and reprocessing of construction and demolition waste.
Although aggregates are increasingly recycled, the majority of other C&D; waste is often hard to recycle because it is made up of so many different materials – ranging from soil to plasterboard.
Mervyn Jones, WRAP's programme manager for construction waste minimisation and management, said: “This capital competition will help waste management contractors to provide the infrastructure and facilities to allow substantially more recycling of construction and demolition waste, resulting in less being disposed to landfill.”
“Around 30 million tonnes of construction waste goes to landfill each year and contractors are being encouraged to reduce waste and be more resource efficient,” he added.
Designs
The grant competition, entitled The Construction Waste Recycling Infrastructure Capital Support Programme, will provide support for projects that create “new solutions” to increase the quantity of C&D; waste materials that are recovered and recycled.
This must be achieved through the creation of “innovative designs” for new or existing infrastructure to increase material collections and recycling.
Michelle O'Riley, WRAP capital grants manager, said: “WRAP wants to support the development of innovative solutions for efficient collection, segregation and processing infrastructure for both site-segregated and mixed C&D; waste from UK construction site. This funding competition aims to stimulate investment in facilities that will greatly improve the recovery and recycling of C&D; waste materials.”
