In all, 1.9 million has been awarded to 13 new research and development projects, which are seeking ways to increase the use of recycled materials. There were 42 applicants.
If successful applicants' predictions are correct, these projects alone will lead to additional recycling of 295,000 tonnes of glass, 567,000 tonnes of paper, 450,000 tonnes of wood, and 10,500 tonnes of plastic, WRAP said.
The first round of WRAP's research and development programme saw 3.6 million shared among 21 projects in January 2002.
The winners are:
Glass
Total 710,000 to: British Glass, the Building Research Establishment, the Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling, the University of Sheffield.
Paper
Total 610,000 to: the Steel Construction Institute, Pira International, M-Real with the BRE and Salford University.
Plastic
Total 330,000 to: Rapra Technology, Recoup and Intruplas.
Wood
Total 250,000 to: TRADA Technology, BioComposites Centre, Lothian Tree Services.
