The consultation is being run by Enviros, and WRAP has said that resulting guidelines will be aimed primarily at agronomists, regulators and advisers to the agricultural industry.
Building on BSI PAS100:2005, the guidelines will define the characteristics of compost suitable for use in a range of agricultural applications. It will also provide information on maximising the benefits of compost in soil management as part of cross compliance and agri-environmental schemes.
Louis Hollingworth, organics technical manager for WRAP, said: “These guidelines will provide practical assistance on the effective use of compost in agriculture, which currently absorbs approximately 40% of the UK's total production.

“With the projected increases in composting over the next five to ten years, the volume of compost available for use within farming will also increase significantly,” she added.
Enviros has already held consultations with the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Environment Agency and several stakeholders from the agricultural sector. A wider industry consultation is now being carried out until March 17 2006.
