WRAP launches 500,000 community awareness fund

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has launched a 500,000 funding scheme for the community waste sector.

Aimed at not-for-profit waste organisations, charities and environmental groups, the scheme offers financial support for projects to boost public involvement in recycling.

From last Monday, organisations can apply for 100,000 worth of promotional event “kits”.

The kits will help encourage recycling at local events with display panels, leaflets and promotional tools using WRAP's “Recycle Now” logo.

A further 400,000 is available to fund promotional projects such as door-knocking, leaflet distribution, posters and community events. Grants will range from 5,000 and 50,000.

WRAP will examine project proposals and make decisions by December. Successful applications will be good value for money and focus on promoting recycling.

A WRAP spokeswoman said: “This is an excellent opportunity for community sector organisations to work in partnership with WRAP and their local authority to encourage more people to recycle more things more often.”

Deadline
Event kits must be applied for by August 12, for delivery by Christmas, while the deadline for promotional funding is October 20.

The scheme is funded by WRAP's Behavioural Change Local Fund, announced in March (see letsrecycle.com story). It will support community groups and local authorities to increase public awareness of recycling until 2008, as part of WRAP's remit to promote recycling on behalf of the government.

As part of the programme, WRAP is developing a web-based resource specifically for the community sector. Accessible through the main WRAP website, it will provide information and templates to help community groups achieve higher recycling levels.
