WRAP appoints new head of organics

Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has appointed Anne O&#39B;rien (nee Riding) as the new head of organics for its compost programme.

WRAP recently received an additional 16.5 million to expand its work into three new areas involving waste reduction, public awareness and composting (see letsrecycle.com story). Of this funding, 3.5 million was allocated to the compost programme to work with local authorities in setting up green waste collections and offer support to the industry.

Liz Goodwin, director of materials programmes at WRAP, said: “We estimate that the level of organics recycling in the UK needs to quadruple in the next seven years if the UK is to meet the Landfill Directive targets and the implementation of WRAP’s new organics programme will play a significant part in addressing this challenge. I’m delighted that Anne will be continuing to head up our work in this area.”

Mrs O&#39B;rien was previously special projects manager at WRAP and worked on compost standards and WRAP's organic strategy. She has 14 years experience in the waste and recycling sector and has previously worked for British Steel, Shanks, UK Waste and Enviros. Her work for these companies ranged from managing a packaging compliance scheme for UK Waste to working on the Peterborough MRF and kerbside collection programme, as well as the operation of two composting plants for Shanks.

She will now be responsible for market development, supporting training, investing in processing and infrastructure and promoting sales of composted products.
