Mr Workman joined CPI from British Glass in 2010, taking over the role from the former director general Dr Martin Oldman.
The Swindon-based CPI represents members across the paper supply chain including papermakers, tissue manufacturers, corrugated packaging producers and recovered paper merchants.
During his stint at the helm of the organisation, Mr Workman has been a vocal advocate of a ‘change in attitude’ towards the waste and recycling sectors, arguing in favour of a switch from ‘waste’ to ‘resources’.
‘Challenges’
Mr Workman commented: “I have really enjoyed the last six years, and will leave with very mixed feelings, but I believe that the time is right for a change. The legislative landscape is evolving and bringing with it fresh challenges which I think are best handled by someone able to lead the organisation through into the 2020s. My successor will inherit a fantastic team of people who together have transformed CPI into a very high profile and successful trade association.”
Applications for the post are now being sought, with the organisation seeking a candidate who can “demonstrate a successful track record in influencing government at all levels”.
In statement announcing the departure, CPI said: “CPI would like to thank Mr Workman for his dedication and leadership in raising the profile of CPI and in vigorously defending the interests of its members.”
