The multi-million pound plant is being developed under a 27-year waste treatment contract agreed between Veolia ES and Shropshire council in October 2007 (see letsrecycle.com story).

The Battlefield ERF represents Clugstons fifth energy-from waste project in the UK. To date, the company has either completed or is constructing energy recovery facilities in Lincolnshire on behalf of FCC Environment (formerly WRG) (see letsrecycle.com story), in Sheffield and Staffordshire on behalf of Veolia ES (see letsrecycle.com story), and, in Oxfordshire on behalf of Viridor (see letsrecycle.com story).

Project

The Battlefield project will see Clugston working alongside its process engineering partner CNIM to construct the plant, which will burn up to 90,000 tonnes of residual waste a year to product heat and power. Work on the plant follows the successful outcome of a planning dispute last year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Due to open in 2015, the facility, which is adjacent to the existing household waste recycling centre and transfer station, is expected to reduce landfill disposal in the county to 5% once operational. The project will involve approximately 200 construction workers during the building stage and create 21 permanent posts.

Steve Radcliffe, managing director at Clugston Construction, said: We are delighted to have secured this contract which will be the fifth scheme we have delivered, in joint venture with CNIM.

Donald Macphail, regional director for Veolia ES, said: We are excited to now be entering the construction phase and once again to be working with the Clugston CNIM team who are also responsible for the construction of our ERF in Staffordshire which is due to become operational in December this year.

Clugston Construction is part of the privately owned Clugston Group, which also has interests in logistics and property.
