Joan Bakewell, who reminisced about wartime rationing and recycling, hosted the presentation of nine awards to recognise excellence in recycling and sustainable waste management. The winners of this year's National Recycling Awards, are as follows:
Best local authority initiative, sponsored by Severnside
Winner: Essex County Council – for “era”, a new scheme with Essex district and borough councils working together to test the feasibility of household recycling projects.
Finalists: included Blaby District Council and Hart District Council.
Best industry recycling initiative, sponsored by Biffa
PPR Wipag – for their unique innovations in automotive plastics recycling where laminated and painted plastics are recovered from both waste & reject material and also end-of-life vehicles.
Finalists:
included OSS Group Ltd and Royal Albert Hall.
Best partnership project for recycling, sponsored by M-Real
Winner:
The Recycling Consortium – for the Community Waste Action programme to support local authorities set up community based initiatives, with an annual partnering of up to 10 councils.
Finalist:
North Ayrshire Council.
Recycling Officer of the Year 2001, sponsored by Serviceteam.
Winner:
Richard Bower, Recycling Education Officer at Cornwall County Council.
Finalists
Mark Shelton, Cambridgeshire County Council and Carole Taylor, Lancashire County Council.
Recycling Target Success, sponsored by Aylesford Newsprint.
Winner:
DVLA – for its high recycling rates and staff involvement in the division-wide initiative, covering recycling of paper, cardboard, pallets, toners, fluorescent tubes, cooking oil, cans, mobile phones, and glass – with many schemes benefiting charities.
Finalists:
Durham City Council and EPS Packaging Group.
Best Waste Minimisation project of the year, sponsored by Worktwice
Winner:
Leicestershire Waste Minimisation Association – for the development of environmental awareness, based on a waste minimisation culture, within 30 Leicestershire businesses.
Finalists:
BDF Newlife and London Borough of Enfield.
