The company, whose registered address is at Prince of Wales Industrial Estate, Abercarn was told that it had engaged in an appalling catalogue of offences and had shown a lack of regard for the proper regulation of its activities.
The offences ranged from allowing waste to escape from its site to knowingly permitting deposits of asbestos, which the company was not allowed to accept. The Agency advised the court that these offences had taken place over a period of time from April to October 1999.
The magistrates heard that the Agency's investigation into the company's activities followed a number of complaints from local residents about the general running of the site.
Speaking after the case Philip Burgess, acting South East Wales Environment Protection Manager said: “The company's flouting of good housekeeping and a general unwillingness to comply with its waste management licence, despite the issuing of several enforcement notices, forced the Agency's hand. We take concerns raised by local residents very seriously, and will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary to prevent illegal activity of this kind.”
