Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil county borough councils have formed a sub-regional group to award the contract, which will see Aylesford providing recycling banks for the collection of newspaper and magazines.
Aylesford had previously run long-standing paper bank services for both Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent county borough councils.

Working together as a consortium allowed the authorities to secure “the most economic and practical” recycling bank contract, the company said. Regional working allows larger contracts that encourage recycling companies to bid, helps secure investments and “offers the public a far better deal”, Aylesford said.
Karen Newell, regional manager for Aylesford Newsprint, said: “Securing this new contract is fantastic. We are always keen to extend our paper bank contracts as these continue to be an invaluable source or premium quality recyclable paper.”
The company said the new contract covers an extensive area, with 12 banks within the Blaenau Gwent area alone collecting over 184 tonnes of recyclable newspapers and magazines last year.
Aylesford is donating 1 to local charities for every tonne of paper collected in the three Welsh areas. The South Gwent Children’s Foundation and the Noah’s Ark Appeal are both set to benefit from paper recycling carried out by householders.
Last year, the two charities gained just over 3,310 through the Aylesford recycling contracts with Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent county borough councils.
