Welsh community recycling group receives 270,000 funding

Cylch, the community recycling network in Wales, has received Welsh Assembly Government funding of 270,000, Minister for Environment Sue Essex announced today.

Announcing the funding, Ms Essex said: “The Welsh Assembly Government is setting challenging targets for increasing the amount of municipal waste we recycle and compost, as set out in our draft Waste Strategy for Wales.

“Community recycling groups across Wales have a vital contribution to make in minimising and recycling waste. I am delighted to announce this funding, which will help Cylch to continue the co-ordination of the valuable work undertaken by such groups, by providing valuable advice and support.

“The funding will also help Cylch facilitate partnerships with local authorities and businesses. I attach considerable importance to the partnership approach as a means of improving our recycling performance.”

The Wales environment minister added that she considered the community recycling sector to have a proven track record in its ability to initiate local re-use and recycling schemes and provide work and training through a range of social projects.

“Community recycling also plays an important role in educating the public and raising awareness about waste issues. This will be of fundamental importance if the Assembly’s waste policies are to be delivered.”

The work of the community sector will feature in the final Waste Strategy for Wales which is due for publication this spring. In a draft strategy the Welsh Assembly proposed a target of 40% recycling and composting by 2010. The draft strategy can be seen at:
