Welsh Assembly announces 9.5 million fund for businesses

The Welsh Assembly Government is to provide businesses with 9.5 million worth of funding to help them reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill.

A total of 6.8 million of the fund will be allocated over a three year period through the Materials Action Programme (MAP). The Envirowise programme, which provides support for companies who want to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill, will receive 3 million of the MAP money.

” There is a real danger that by ignoring the waste reduction messages, businesses will lose out financially “
– Carwyn Jones, minister for environment, planning and countryside

The Materials Action Programme also includes additional funding for the Waste and Resources Action Programme. The money will also go towards finding markets for recyclable materials produced by businesses.

Funding will be made available for a new initiative to link companies producing wastes to companies who can use the waste as a raw material. The programme intends to improve the understanding of how waste resources are currently managed in Wales.

Another organisation to benefit will be the Environment Agency who will receive funding to improve the enforcement of flytipping.

Announcing the funds, Carwyn Jones, minister for environment planning and countryside, warned that businesses that ignore waste reduction will be hit hard financially in the future.

He said: “There is a real danger that by ignoring the waste reduction messages, businesses will lose out financially. Businesses can save a huge amount of money by cutting waste and improving resource efficiency, often with little or no investment. It is a win-win situation and I urge businesses to get involved.

“They will save money in the long term and the environment will benefit enormously by businesses reducing the amount of waste they currently landfill in Wales. The financial impact of the Landfill Tax has obvious implications for businesses and this new programme will help them to find alternatives to landfill through reducing, recycling or reusing waste,” he added.
