The incidents took place on Saturday (26 September 2026), with firefighters tackling fires at recycling centres in both locations.
In Glasgow, crews were called to a fire affecting a recycling centre near Bogmoor Road, while in Peterborough firefighters attended a fire involving a skip at a site on Fengate.
Blaze at Shieldhall Recycling Centre
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to Shieldhall Recycling Centre near Bogmoor Road, Glasgow, at around 11.25am on Saturday.
Three fire appliances and a high-reach vehicle were deployed to the incident.
Due to high levels of smoke in the area, nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. The fire service also advised anyone outside the immediate area who could see or smell smoke to follow the same guidance.
The site was closed on Saturday while crews dealt with the fire.
Glasgow City Council has since confirmed that the recycling centre reopened on Sunday (27 September).
Fengate centre hit by skip fire
A separate fire broke out at a recycling centre on Fengate, Peterborough, at around 10.28am on Saturday.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Stanground, Dogsthorpe and the north roaming fire engine attended the incident.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire, which was affecting a skip at the site.
Crews left the area and handed the incident back to the site, returning to their stations by around 1pm.
The fire service said the cause of the incident was believed to be accidental.
Peterborough City Council confirmed that its Household Recycling Centre, which is operated by FCC Environment, reopened on Sunday, although it is temporarily unable to accept small electrical appliances following the fire.
The council has asked residents to only visit the site if strictly necessary while it returns to normal operations.
