The scheme said it was offering “a life line to local authorities and AATFs who find themselves without a home for their 2007 evidence of Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) collections or who find themselves coming late to the rules of the new system under the UK WEEE regulations.”
Under the new rules, local authorities must submit their evidence of WEEE collection to a settlement centre by 5pm today (April 30).
Deadline
If evidence is not posted by the deadline local authorities will be unable to claim back costs of collecting WEEE for the first compliance period (July 1 2007 to December 31 2007).
Valpak said that becasue of the deadline, it has made an offer to “accept the evidence, free of charge, on behalf of the local authorities/AATFs who may not yet have registered an account with the Settlement Centre and will seek to secure, as close to the market rate for the evidence, or swap the evidence, and as a result extend the ability for authorities to recoup their costs by another month.”
A spokesperson for Valpak added: “Local authorities and companies who registered as AATFs have shown a commitment to make these regulations work and as such we would like to provide a possible opportunity to extend the deadline for these organisations by getting them to commit evidence to our scheme and we will seek to trade this material or swap it with other schemes on their behalf.
“Without this route we feel local authorities and AATFs could miss the opportunity to sell their 2007 evidence and therefore will have no chance of regaining any of the funds they have paid out to collect WEEE in 2007.”
There are a large number of compliance schemes and it is possible that special arrangements may be offered by some of these.
