From the end of April 2003, 23,000 low-rise homes across the borough will receive fortnightly collections of green waste. These will join the 3,000 homes that already receive green waste collections. The project, which is not receiving DEFRA funding, will also require two new collection vehicles and is thought to be costing the council hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Councillor Derek Scudder, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This is a great opportunity for Watford to make a massive contribution to a more sustainable future and to demonstrate the commitment of the Mayor's administration to the environment.
“We have had lots of positive feedback from people who took part in the trial and I hope the rest of the town takes advantage of this more environmentally friendly way to get rid of their garden waste.”
Over the next few weeks, every household will receive a 240 litre green wheeled bin made by Kliko Environmental Systems. The green waste will be collected by a council in-house team and composted by Hertfordshire-based E Q Waste Management.
The council hopes the collections will yield about 5,000 tonnes of green waste a year and hit its recycling target of 20% by 2003-04.
