Organised by Wastewise Essex and Cambridgeshire, sponsors of the event include the Environment Agency and the government regional office for eastern England.

Wastewise is an offshoot of Wise, a body set up by Chelmsford-based Anglia Polytechnic University to encourage local social enterprises. It plans to work with existing recycling operations and to develop new projects to create at least 50 new jobs by 2005.
Lewis Herbert, a former waste policy officer with Essex county council who now works at the university, said recycling offered many opportunities for community organisations. His work has funding from the European Social Fund.
He said that Wastewise would help organisations to win funding from sources including the New Opportunities Fund, Transforming Waste, and the Government, and wanted to hear from people with sound business ideas.
The conference will flag up the benefits of exploiting opportunities in the waste sector. Already, about half the social businesses supported by Wise are involved in waste.
- Chelmsford waste contractor Kart-A-Way has bought Tanners Skip Hire to create what it says will be the largest privately owned waste collection and recycling contractor in north Essex. Kart-A-Way is itself owned by Mid Essex Gravel.
