Following the departure of Paul Ashworth last month (see letsrecycle.com story), Wastelink, 38-year-old Fiona Lowry takes on the post of chief executive.

Ms Lowry will be responsible for all the activities of Wastelink Ltd and Wastepack Ltd, which provide outsourced waste management, recycling and compliance services to around 700 customers.

Wastelink chairman Eric Priestley, said: “Fiona has the ideal qualities we were seeking. She has created and developed a highly successful support services business, based on an acute awareness of the requirements of customers. We are confident that she will lead the company successfully through the next stage of its growth potential.”

Ms Lowry had worked at the BBC transmission service which broadcast the BBC World Service, until the Corporation decided to privatise the service to finance its digital broadcasting. Ms Lowry led a 21 million management buy-out of the service, which became Merlin Communications International.

As Merlin chief executive, Ms Lowry then saw Merlin bought by warships builder Vosper Thornycroft for 95 million in cash and shares. The management team, including Ms Lowry, received 40% of Merlin's equity making them multi-millionaires. She left Merlin in July this year.

A graduate Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Ms Lowry lives in Hertfordshire and will be based at Wastelink's Sawbridgeworth headquarters.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms Lowry said: “I am delighted to have joined Wastelink, the leading independent supplier of outsourced solutions for recycling and waste. We intend to continue our growth through providing value and assurance to an even wider range of customers.”
