Wastepack, the UK's second largest compliance scheme, said today that a recent audit by its regulator, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), revealed that it had secured PRNs for 400,000 out of its 500,000 tonne obligation this year.
A statement from the scheme insisted that it is “confident” it will comply through the PRN system in “2002 and future years”. The company is in the process of appointing people to its PRN acquisition team to strengthen long-term relationships with reprocessors, and it is thought that a new director is to be taken on at senior level.
Wastepack was formally warned by SEPA earlier this year over its 2001 compliance plan. The company discharged 180,000 tonnes of its recovery obligation through the PRN system in 2001, leaving a shortfall of 240,000 tonnes. Another statement from Wastepack is expected soon and will refer to 2001 matters.
Wastepack explained: “The company will soon be making an announcement about the disbursement of the balance of recycling funds from the 2001 plan. Wastepack has always said that these funds will be disbursed through independent organisations and applied to projects designed to increase recycling.”
