Waste World Cup qualifiers announced

This year's Waste World Cup football tournament will see 30 teams from around the waste and recycling sector taking part, organisers announced today.

The tournament, which will involve six-aside teams including both male and female football players, takes place on Friday September 8 at the University of Northampton.

A feast of football will again take place in early September, with both ACM Waste and letsrecycle.com (pictured) among the 30 teams named to take part

The event kicks off with teams playing through a group stage, before the best two teams from each group go through to the knock-out phases to compete for the Cup itself.

This year, for the first time, the Waste World Cup is being supported by sponsors Waste Recycling Group and REgenerist.

And, alongside the main competition for teams, individual football players will be able to compete for a cash prize through a “cross-bar challenge” competition.

Fair play
Announcing the teams, Dr Margaret Bates, chair of the Waste World Cup organising committee, said: “We are pleased to welcome a prestigious line-up of companies and organisations operating in the recycling and waste management sector. This year includes quality competition seeking to depose last year's champions, the waste management division of Barclays Bank.

“However, the Waste World Cup will again emphasise the important consideration of fair play this year, maintaining its reputation as the premier sporting fixture for the waste and recycling sector.”

“proud”
Cementing its position as one of the key events in the waste management calendar, the Waste World Cup is being supported by sponsors this year for the first time in its four-year history.

Chris Cox, commercial director at sponsors Waste Recycling Group, said: “Waste Recycling Group is proud to be supporting this prestigious event. We hope the event emulates the good attitudes and the competitiveness of this summer’s World Cup in Germany”.

Jason Fazackerley, sales director at sponsors Cedilla Systems, said: “REgenerist is pleased to support and participate in this event. Whilst we cannot guarantee that our footballing skills will be as good as our software skills, we hope to make a positive impact. We’re sure that the event will be thoroughly enjoyable and (as they say in clichs) that sport will be the real winner!”
