Waste Watch upgrades recycled products guide

National waste awareness organisation Waste Watch is revamping its web-based guide to recycled products which will make it easier to find out where recycled products can be bought and which recycled materials they contain.

Waste Watch's website, which contains a comprehensive list of recycled products, is being upgraded and expanded as a result of a 18,367 grant from Biffaward and funding from the Yellow Pages' Directory Recycling Scheme.

Barbara Herridge, executive director at Waste Watch, said: “Waste reduction is not simply about boosting recycling levels – buying recycled is a crucial part of closing the waste loop. Waste Watch has always been keen to support and encourage this aspect of waste minimisation and we will continue to do so through the provision of services such as the Recycled Products Guide. Thanks to this new funding, the RPG will in future offer a more comprehensive and up-to-date service.”

The directory includes information on both recyclers who reprocess recycled material, manufacturers who incorporate recyclable material in their products and retailers who sell recycled products. The directory
lists recycled products and includes the type of material that has been incorporated into a product. The directory also includes the brand names of recycled products so they can be easily identified by consumers.

The new-style guide, will only be available on-line and will also enable companies to amend their entries on-line. Waste Watch hopes that by doing this, information about a company's product will stay up-to-date.

The latest Yellow Pages Annual Recycling Survey showed that almost eight out of ten people buy recycled goods. A total of 60% of people are also willing to pay more for goods with a perceived environmental benefit, with 90% of these prepared to pay a 10% green premium.
