Waste Watch and Valuplast to produce guidelines on plastic waste

Waste Watch has received a 150,000 award to research the recovery and recycling of plastics.

Valuplast, the plastics materials organisation, will carry out the study on behalf of Waste Watch. Valuplast will look at the waste stream to discover where different plastics are located and the tonnages of specific material types. The 12-month project, which started in April, is being funded by Biffaward through the landfill tax credit scheme.

Brian Smith, of Valuplast, said: “We will look at what is being thrown away and will identify the materials that are entering the waste stream. The study will help to establish best practice guidelines on plastics recycling.”

Waste Watch is supervising the study and projects manager, Doreen Fedrigo said: “The project will give valuable support for local authorities looking to deliver the recycling targets set out in the waste strategy.”

She added: “We want to encourage more plastics recycling in the UK and we will look at the results under wider policy context. We will use the data to see how policy and product design can be better implemented.”

The UK consumes over four million tonnes of plastic materials each year and dealing more effectively with plastic waste will significantly reduce the volume of waste going to landfill.
