The company’s waste operation now stretches from the south-west of England, across central England and the north of Wales and up to Yorkshire. Its work in Scotland covers the southern/central areas incorporating Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The company has been divided into seven regions following the purchase. They are: WRG Scotland, WRG Yorkshire, WRG Eastern, WRG Northern, WRG North Western, WRG South Eastern and WRG Central.
The purchase means that the company now handles nearly 10 million tonnes of waste a year and was particularly important in terms of the company’s expansion into southern England.
Hanson handled 2.9 million tonnes of waste per year, with 52% of turnover coming from long-term contracts with local authorities. Its profit before tax was 8.3 million.
Four materials recycling facilities are in the pipeline and the acquisition included planning permission to an energy from waste plant in Allington, Kent.
Composting is also playing an important part in the company’s waste management. Its household waste MRF in Lowestoft, Suffolk, is achieving a recycling rate of 40% through composting, with the product being used as a soil improver in restoration, landscaping and agriculture.
