Waste Recycling Group began large-scale composting in 1998 and now has 22 composting facilities throughout the UK. The largest sites are in Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, Surrey, West Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Waste Recycling Group's composting sites currently handle more than 220,000 tonnes of green waste a year and the company expects to increase that figure to 250,000 tonnes by the end of this year. Some of its sites were acquired with the purchase of Hanson Waste Management in December 2000.
Green waste including grass clippings, leaves and prunings which are taken by the public to civic amenity sites and collected from the kerbside is delivered to Waste Recycling's composting sites where it is mechanically shredded, composted and screened. Regular testing is carried out on the compost to ensure that it meets the stringent requirements of the Composting Association, Environment Agency and local authorities. The resulting compost and soil conditioners are used for landscaping, agricultural and reclamation projects.
Group chief executive Nigel Sandy said: “The significant investment by the company in the development of innovative recycling approaches illustrates our commitment to assisting our local authority customers to achieve more sustainable waste management in a very cost effective way. Waste Recycling is now the largest UK producer of green waste-derived compost and I have no doubt that we will continue to play an increasingly
important role in the development of this expertise.”
