Waste Recycling Group chair quits after two months

Waste Recycling Group has been shocked by the resignation of its chairman Pat Barrett after only two months in office.

The company remained tight-lipped about the cause, citing only “personal reasons”.

Mr Barrett went with immediate effect and also resigned as a non-executive director.

Another non-executive director, James Newman, becomes interim chairman. The company intends to appoint two new non-executive directors.

Mr Barrett joined the board only in March and became chairman after the company’s annual general meeting on 10 April.

He is a former chief executive of Jefferson Smurfit Group’s UK operations, and chairman of Devro, East Surrey Holdings and Pura.

Waste Management Group's previous chairman Paul Rackham said at the time that Mr Barrett was “also a non-executive director of Wessex Water, and conversant with its substantial waste management interests”.

Waste Management Group last year saw a rise of 49% net of landfill tax in its turnover to 281. 2 million, and pre-tax profit increased by 15.5% to 43.3m.
