One town centre recycling point has already been set up outside a branch of Woolworth's in Park Street, allowing shoppers to recycle cans, newspapers and glass bottles.

Further facilities are being planned, to run alongside Walsall's kerbside recycling scheme, which sees glass, paper and cardboard collected.
The metropolitan borough has been set a target to recycle 24% of household waste by 2005/06, but has been struggling to achieve half that level.
Councillor Marco Longhi, Walsall Council cabinet member for environment, transportation and planning, said: “We all need to play our part and recycle far more than we do now. Our aim is to get recycling points in as many places as possible and as close to people as possible.”
Library
Meanwhile, in a bid to reduce the amount of waste generated by householders, Walsall council has launched a campaign to encourage more people to read newspapers and magazines in the library.
More than 90 magazine titles are stocked in the Walsall Central Library in Lichfield Street, as well as five local newspapers, 10 national newspapers and publications from around the world. The library also has subscriptions to 30 magazines online as well as 10 newspapers.

Helena Denham, reference library manager, said: “What we’d like to see is even more people calling in to use them. Not everyone knows what we’ve got and when they do they are surprised.”
Shoppers are also being urged to use the town centre library as a respite from frantic Christmas shopping.
