The contract covers 60 NHS sites across the county, including Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust, South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.
The deal will see Viridor recycle dry recyclables including plastic, paper, cardboard, tins, and glass, as well as organic waste including green waste and food waste.
The contract will also include treatment of some residual waste and construction materials.
Depots
The recyclables will be sent to Viridor’s depots in Devon, which includes sites at Plymouth, Newton Abbot, Barnstaple and company’s headquarters in Taunton. The contract is due to start from February 1 2015.
Peter Schofield, environmental services manager at the South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are looking forward to working with Viridor who have already demonstrated potential mechanisms for increasing the amount of waste that the Trusts can recycle and I am confident they will deliver enhanced performance and value for money throughout the life of the contract.”

The NHS contracts come at time of expansion for Viridor in Devon. In October, the firm officially opened an energy-from-waste facility on the Marsh Barton Trading Estate in Exeter (see letsrecycle.com story).
The £45 million facility will treat around 60,000 tonnes of residual waste per year on behalf of the county council.
