The Kent-based waste management company will officially take over from current contractors DSD and Cleanaway on 4 October 2004.
Under the new contract, Verdant will be responsible for the collection of 53,000 tonnes of waste, including kerbside recycling, bulky waste, clinical waste, fridges, and bring sites as well as street cleansing and public convenience cleansing.
Mid Bedfordshire has a current recycling rate of 14% and Verdant is confident of helping the council reach its 2005-6 target of 24% through the new services.
Gary Alderson, head of environmental services at the council, said: “The company has been successful following a rigorous tendering procedure including careful consideration of price, method statement, quality and environmental management systems. I am confident that they offer the best value for money for the council and will deliver an excellent quality of service for the residents in Mid Beds.”
The contract will see all 52,000 households in Mid Bedfordshire provided with a wheeled bin for mixed dry recyclables and a green waste collection service.
To ease the transition between the separate contracts for refuse and streets to a single combined contract, Verdant will employ a business manager specifically for the contract who will be in place during May to ready for Verdant's start in October.
