Veolia has been appointed as the waste and recycling management service for the Isle of Wight.

The agreement follows the early exit of the island’s former contractor, Thalia Waste Management.

The £225 million contract was due to last for 25 year and was started in 2015. Prior to this, Biffa had run the services for 18 years.

Veolia’s two-year contract began on 1 April 2026 and includes collections, and waste and recycling treatment.

Veolia and Isle of Wight Council have been working together for several months to ensure that waste services continue.

Natasha Dix, Isle of Wight Council’s Service Director for Waste, Environment, and Planning, said: “The Isle of Wight Council’s priority is, and always will be, providing a reliable, efficient and environmentally responsible waste service for our community.

“Our residents are already some of the most committed recyclers in the country, and this switch marks the next step in supporting the Island’s passion for protecting our beautiful environment.

“We’re pleased to be working with Veolia, who share our commitment to high standards and a sustainable future for our Island.

“Together, we will continue to build on the strengths of our community and deliver the service our residents deserve.

“For now, nothing changes for households – please put your bins out as normal. Collection days and routines stay exactly the same, and no action is needed from residents at this time.”

The contract will provide services to over 73,000 residential properties and includes the operation of two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

It also includes the management of an Energy Recovery Facility and Materials Recovery Facility.

The contract forms part of Veolia’s GreenUp strategy which looks to reinforce its commitment to providing “sustainable, high-quality” environmental services across the UK.

Ben Slater, Veolia Regional Director for Treatment South, said: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and are ready to deliver essential, sustainable and high quality services to residents and businesses across the Island.

“At Veolia, we have extensive experience and expertise in recycling and waste services and look forward to sharing our knowledge and innovation with the Council to help recycle as much as possible and continue their services without disruption.”
