The custom built vehicles are the first of a fleet of six new waste collection trucks to run alongside the existing fleet already in operation across Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The new vehicles come at a time when Olleco is experiencing increased demand for its food waste collection service, following the introduction of the new Waste (Scotland) Regulations at the turn of the year.

Vincent Igoe, general manager of Olleco Scotland, said: We have been working on an innovative new design on our waste vehicles for some time to increase efficiency and customer service. With new legislation coming into place at the beginning of the year changing the way commercial food businesses will manage their waste; we knew that the first quarter was going to be busy and it made sense for us to expand our fleet in Scotland.

This year, as the business continues to grow, we have a number of additional orders underway, including five new oil vehicles which will support our fresh oil delivery and used waste oil collection service. With near silent operation and fantastic fuel consumption, our vehicles are the most modern on the roads.

Safety firm demonstrates cycle safety technology

Vehicle safety technology specialists Innovative Safety Systems Ltd (ISS) has launched Cyclear, a cyclist warning display system designed for HGV operators.

The Cyclear system has an illuminated sign and speaker to alert cyclists when the vehicle is turning left and also features a sequencing sensor, which notifies the driver when a cyclist or pedestrian is approaching.

ISS recently demonstrated the technology to cycle safety campaigner Cynthia Barlow, who said: ISS has put a great deal of effort and engineering expertise into creating a safety system that is effective for both cyclists and vehicle operators. If used more widely, this system could really help to reduce the number of cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in our towns and cities.

The provision of workshop design, build and fit-out expertise is typical of the type of services we plan to offer going forward and reflects the companys innovative approach to customer service.

UK provider for Effenco hybrid HGV system

Canadian HGV developer Effenco Hybrid Solutions has teamed up with UK-based used refused vehicle provider RVS to deliver the Engine Stop Start hybrid system to its vehicles in the UK.

The Engine Stop-Start system works by automatically turning the engine off when the truck is immobile and supplying alternative power to auxiliary systems such as bin lifts. Hydraulic energy harvested from braking and topped up if needed with engine power is used to restart the engine.

According to the firms, using the technology reduces the carbon footprint of each truck by up to 28 tonnes per year.

Spencer Law, managing director, RVS said: We were very impressed with the savings and environmental benefits offered by Effencos Stop Start system, and we are delighted to represent the company in the UK. It can be fitted to most types of truck and offers average fuel savings of 25% per vehicle. The system is already in operation across North America and is proving to be a big success. We are excited to be bringing this state of the art technology to our customers.

Ribbex in RCV and ADR investment

Hertfordshire-based waste management firm Ribbex UK has expanded its fleet with an investment in a new refuse collection vehicle with a PM weighing system, as well as a 27,000 litre capacity ADR vacuum tanker.

This represents another 350,000 investment for the firm, which also took delivery of two 260 tonne collection vehicles in September.

Operations director Alasdair Coulson, said: Ribbex Uk Ltd has continued to invest heavily in the provision of its commercial services by purchasing another trade waste collection vehicle as well as its first vacuum tanker. The dustcart utilises a weighing system calibrated and installed by the Vishnay Precision Group in tandem with our bodybuilders Incomol. This allows us to provide accurate weight data back to our customers to show a charging transparency as well as provide feedback for compliance reporting.

The vacuum tanker adds to the hazardous waste expertise provided by our sister enterprise, the Honeywagon Co, and begins the standardisation of our services under the Ribbex brand. The barrel is built to ADR specification and can carry flammables as well as other suitable dangerous goods for transport on the road in addition to the more common liquids and sludges we already deal with.”
