Van der Meij joins DS Smith in Germany

DS Smith Recycling has made new appointments on the continent which include former Viridor Resource Management managing director, Herman van der Meij, joining the business in Germany.

Mr van der Meij’s appointment at DS Smith Recycling comes after the departure of the company’s chief executive for Germany, Achim Wieser. Mr Wieser had played a key role at DS Smith Recycling including winning a contract to handle 210,000 tonnes per annum of waste packaging from the Edeka retail chain.

Also joining DS Smith in Germany is a ‘returnee’, Bernd Mäntele who rejoins the company to handle business integration and administrative processes with the DS Smith customer base.

Mr van der Meij and Bernd Mäntele start their roles on 1 October and 1 November, respectively.

The appointment of Mr van der Meij means that he spent just a few months at the energy from waste business AEB (Amsterdam) which he joined earlier this year.

Mill customers

In a statement, DS Smith said: “Over the coming months, van der Meij will play a driving role in securing quality paper for recycling from Germany, Benelux, Poland and the surrounding markets. Accordingly, he will focus on securing supply for paper mill customers across key markets and inspiring service innovation with retailers, recyclers and municipals.”

Jochen Behr, head of recycling at DS Smith, commented: “The appointment of Herman and Bernd will allow us to become even more closely integrated with our customers, suppliers and partners. Alongside improving our agility in innovation, the move will ensure we are the supplier of choice for our customers’ recycling requirements.”

Expansion

The two appointments are seen as confirmation of DS Smith’s ongoing work to strengthen its business in Europe and worldwide as the UK-headquartered business continues on an expansion trail.
