Valpak rules out direct investment and looks for sustainable cost

Valpak chief executive Jonson Cox has ruled out direct investment by the packaging waste compliance scheme in recycling facilities.

In an exclusive interview with letsrecycle.com, Mr Cox said that the compliance scheme no longer planned to invest directly in projects such as the HLC energy plant and materials recycling facility at Crymlyn Burrows
in the South Wales borough of Neath Port Talbot.

Also out is the idea of flotation which was being considered by Valpak a year ago. Mr Cox explained that the compliance scheme is now to operate along the lines of a “mutual organisation” for the benefit of members and will look to provide services at the lowest sustainable cost.

Mr Cox admits surprise at the way the market turned out for packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) in 2002 and predicts that lower levels are likely to be seen in 2003.
