Wybone had made a strong start to the tournament, opening their title defence with a 2-0 win over Viridor Athletic in the group stage, as well as recording victories over Bywaters and Saica Natur, before dispatching B&M on penalties following a goalless semi final.
2007 and 2010 champions Valpak had a similarly straightforward route to the final, beginning with wins against Biffa, Urbaser and Resource Futures in the group stages and beating pre-tournament favourites Mick George 1-0 in the semi final.
Single goal
The final itself was decided by a single goal, and Valpak captain Dan Stokes said he was “ecstatic” to be bringing home the team’s third Waste World Cup title. Photos from the day can be viewed in the gallery below.
Among the other winners were Resource Futures who won the Shield Competition, with Sharpsmart finishing runners up, Viridor Athletic saw off competition from Hadfields to win the Bowl Tournament, while Grundon beat Viridor Town to grab the prize in the Plate Tournament. Saica won the vase tournament, beating FCC Blue.
Cambridge United goalkeeper Chris Dunn was on hand to present the trophies. Half time entertainment came from the Mick George Cheerleaders, who were also on hand throughout the day to cheer on the competitors.
Prize-winners
Individual prize-winners included Mick George’s Chris Racher, who won the ‘Chip-in-the-Skip’ Challenge, Max Hadland, winner of the Crossbar Challenge-sponsored by Ceris Burns, and Veolia’s Michael Groves who won the Taylor Bins Wheelie Bin Challenge. Each of the three winners received a cheque for £100.
This year’s Waste World Cup was sponsored by Mick George and organised by letsrecycle.com with charity donations going to PODS Charitable Trust. Pitch sponsors were UKCM, Hadfields, Smart Solutions and Red Kite.
