Announcing the appointment, Valpak chairman and MP John Gummer said: “Steve has been a key member of the current management team. He is committed to maintaining the current strategy of secure, lowest cost compliance and the company’s focus on the needs of members.”

Current Valpak chief executive Jonson Cox said: “Steve has played an important role in implementing our strategy over the last 18 months and I am pleased that he will be leading Valpak forward in 2004 and beyond.”

Mr Gough has been with the scheme for three years, as IT director and more recently director of operations, which has seen him running the procurement and materials divisions of Valient Holdings Ltd, the operating arm of Valpak.

His role has included overseeing the procurement of packaging waste recovery notes and developing Valpak's commercial glass recycling service, Recycle-More-Glass, before it was successfully sold to Berryman in April 2003.

Commenting on his new appointment, Mr Gough said: “I am delighted to take on the role of Valpak chief executive. As the UK faces increasing recycling and recovery targets Valpak is in an excellent position to offer its members low cost, reliable compliance and I look forward to leading the company as we face the challenges ahead.”
