Valpak adds Tesco to pre-compliance scheme

Producer responsibility scheme Valpak has signed up Tesco as the latest member of its Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive pre-compliance service.

The addition of the largest UK retailer brings the number of companies who have joined the scheme up to 60. Other companies already signed up include Miele, Brother and Hornby plc.

”We believe Valpak has the right knowledge and experience, as well as a proven track record in packaging compliance“
– Andrew Duckworth, projects manager at Tesco

Andrew Duckworth, projects manager at Tesco said: “We welcome Valpak's entry into the compliance arena for WEEE. Increased competition will help UK businesses to achieve compliance at lowest cost. We believe Valpak has the right knowledge and experience, as well as a proven track record in packaging compliance.”

As part of the pre-compliance scheme Valpak offers information on the latest developments on the WEEE Directive as well as the opportunity to join its full compliance scheme which is set to run once the WEEE Directive legislation is completed.

Commenting on the pre-compliance scheme Michael Sadler, head of Valpak's WEEE pre-compliance service, said:

“Out pre-compliance service looks like continuing well into 2005, as further delays on the Directive now appear inevitable. With sixty members representing the full range of manufacturers and retailers to be affected, we have an influential voice in government.

“The initiative has developed beyond its initial role as an information service, to provide members with more on the essential practicalities of WEEE compliance. We have also created a cost calculator which will assist our members when preparing budgets.”
