Valpak acquires Preston materials recycling plant

Valpak – the UK's largest packaging waste compliance scheme – has acquired a materials recycling facility to strengthen its Valient Recycling materials handling division.

The scheme, which works on behalf of over 3,000 packaging producers to meet packaging producer responsibility requirements to recycle packaging waste, today announced the acquisition of Preston-based Waste Management Group.

” This acquisition will enable Valient Recycling Ltd to expand its service offering to UK businesses. “
– Steve Gough, Valpak

The Group, formerly known as Plastics Recovery Ltd, comes with a plastic bottle and metal can sorting plant capable of processing about 50,000 tonnes of material each year. This plant includes state-of-the-art optical technology capable of automatically separating different types of plastic bottle.

The acquired company also includes a dedicated collection division – known as Total Waste Solutions – boasting a fleet of 12 vehicles.

The acquisition, which could be worth several million pounds, comes following weeks of negotiations (see letsrecycle.com story).

Valpak said the Waste Management Group business would be integrated into the current Valient Recycling operation.

“Exciting”
Steve Gough, chief executive of Valpak, said: “This is a very significant and exciting move for the company. The acquisition is great news for our compliance members and recycling customers and for the industry as a whole.

“This acquisition will enable Valient Recycling Ltd to expand its service offering to UK businesses by combining the Waste Management Group operation into its existing partner network.

“Both of these activities will increase the availability of recyclables to the reprocessing industry and strengthen PRN supplies for our members,” Mr Gough said.

Phil Strutt of the Waste Management Group, said: “This is a good deal for all concerned. Both WMG's existing customers and VRL's customers can be assured of a seamless transition and continued and improved level of service and value from the new arrangement.”

Expand
Valient currently deals with about 250,000 tonnes of packaging waste nationwide every year, but after the addition of the Waste Management Group, the company expects to expand to 350,000 tonnes a year. Much of the material is exported by Valient, and the company has its own dedicated office in China to help manage these exports.

Mike Jefferson, general manager of Valient Recycling, explained to letsrecycle.com that the Preston site would take in material collected around the UK – through existing Valient operations and through the new collection fleet.

He said the Preston site would take in waste through contracts with local authorities, other waste management companies and UK businesses. Mr Jefferson said: “The site does accept material delivered, but Valient also offers collections working with a choice of containers and out Rescape system.”
